Former Pelham softball pitcher Kelsey Dennis was named a National Junior College Athletic Association All-American.

Dennis, a freshman at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, was recently named the NJCAA Region XXII Player of the Year after collecting a 34-4 record and leading WSCC to the national championship game. She posted a 0.84 earned run average and struck out 340 batters in 249 and a third innings. She tossed 24 complete games.

She was also named to the All-Region First Team.

The recognitions, along with the national exposure of making it to the national championship, has gained Dennis and other WSCC players exposure, including a phone call from Texas Tech inquiring about the former Pelham star, according to a WSCC press release.

Two former Shelby County talents are headed to a four-year college, as former Oak Mountain player Allison Reynolds will be going to Birmingham-Southern and former Pelham player Ashley Smith is headed to Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. Smith was recently named a Distinguished Academic All-American by having a grade point average higher than 4.0.

Reynolds and former Coosa Valley baseball player Zac Taylor were named Academic All-Americans, as Reynolds posted a 3.69 GPA and Taylor a 3.64.
