The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has issued a code orange air quality alert for Shelby County for Friday, June 26.

Under code orange conditions, ground level ozone concentrations are expected to reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Children, older adults and people with asthma or heart or lung disease are most at risk under these conditions. Affected people should move indoors if breathing becomes difficult.

ADEM recommends the following actions during an alert day:

Conserve electricity.

Set your air conditioner at a higher temperature.

Limit driving and combine errands.

Use the bus or carpool to work.

Avoid use of gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment.

Refuel cars and trucks after 6 p.m.

Limit engine idling.

Use household, workshop and garden chemicals in ways that keep evaporation to a minimum.
