Entries continue to be accepted for Saturday’s Liberty Day Parade in downtown Columbiana.

Stacy Walkup, executive director of the South Shelby Chamber of Commerce, said about 40 participants have signed up so far.

“But there’s still time for others to enter the parade,” she said.

Those hoping to participate in the event, which starts at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, can call Walkup at 669-9075.

“The parade is going to be judged,” Walkup said. Awards will be given for best overall entry, the Spirit of Freedom award and Most Original. At least two entries will earn honorable mentions.

Parade judges are Brenda Frias of Alabama Power, Donna Smelcer of Shelby Baptist Medical Center and Stephanie Roulier of Second Elegance.

Before the parade, from 1:30-3 p.m., the newly-crowned Miss Alabama Liz Cochran and Miss Shelby County Jessica Andrews will be at Donald Real Estate in Columbiana, signing autographs and posing for photos.

Arts and crafts and food vendors will be offering their goods beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Liberty Day events actually kick off on Friday night with music by Dan Famer and Big Daddy’s New Band performing on Main Street in Columbiana.

Another highlight of Liberty Day is the “Fire in the Sky” fireworks display on Saturday, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Shelby County High School Football Stadium. The evening will also feature the Shinbone Ridge Bluegrass Band and Brushfire.

Organizers are encouraging residents to bring their blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy a picnic during the music and fireworks. The SCHS Band Boosters will operate a concession stand that evening.
