Vanderbilt University picked up a verbal commitment for the Class of 2010 from one of the nation’s top tight ends Thursday, Oak Mountain’s Davis Dudchock.

Dudchock, who is listed among ESPN’s 150 Watch List and ranked the No. 39 tight end in the nation by Scout.com. He visited Vanderbilt for a cookout Thursday and said that the overall combination of what the school had to offer athletically and academically attracted him to the school.

“Vanderbilt probably recruited me the hardest and most consistently throughout the whole time,” Dudchock said.

Dudchock continues in a line of top football players from Shelby County going on to play at Vanderbilt. Briarwood defensive lineman Walker May will join the Commodores this fall, while former Spain Park place kicker Trey Del Greco just completed his freshman year at Vandy on a golf scholarship. Dudchock said he’s talked with both players in recent days.

“I didn’t really know Walker until the cookout. I spent a pretty good bit of time with him,” he said. “I can really see myself, like him, fitting in at Vanderbilt.”

Dudchock said Del Greco talked with him about “how awesome Nashville is as a city.”

Dudchock expects he will most likely redshirt during the 2010 season, but no matter what, he’s glad the recruiting process is over.

“It’s a big relief to get settled and have that stored away before the season. I’m really looking forward to it,” Dudchock said.

As a junior for the Oak Mountain Eagles, Dudchock had 33 receptions for 504 yards and four touchdowns despite missing part of the season due to injury.

He is the son of former Auburn defensive lineman Alex Dudchock. Through the recruiting process, he was offered early by Auburn University and also gained offers from Florida State, Stanford, Troy, UAB, Southern Miss and most recently Tennessee.
