God, prayers reason behind boy’s healing

Dear Editor,

Thank you for publishing an article “Winning at the Game of Life” about our son, Mark Newton, and his battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. We enjoyed meeting Amy Jones and telling her Mark’s story about his journey through cancer treatments and about the sports and TV celebrities he has gotten to meet or talk with.

However, Mark’s story cannot be told completely if the anchor that has brought us through this journey is left on the editing room floor. Our faith in God and the belief that we have in the power of prayer (as Mark and I told to Amy) have given us the strength to face each day.

As I shared with Amy, our world came to a stop when we heard the words, “your son has cancer,” but a feeling of peace came when we realized that God is in control.

We have received words of encouragement from people we’ve never met from as far away as England who are praying for Mark’s healing.

Mark’s story is also not complete without crediting the doctors and nurses that work in the oncology department at Children’s Hospital. They are incredible people, dedicated to caring for children with cancer.
