The city of Calera will receive $168,549 in federal grant money to hire one police officer under the Community Oriented Policing Services program (COPS).

U.S. Atty. Gen. Eric Holder and Vice President Joe Biden announced the grants Tuesday. The grant enables the Calera Police Department to provide salary and benefits to one police officer for three years. Once the three-year period ends, the city must fund the position for subsequent years.

Other police departments receiving grants include Bessemer, Midfield and Tarrant.
