The Oak Mountain All-Star 9-year olds are three wins away from a Dizzy Dean World Series championship in Southaven, Miss.

The “Mini Mites,” as head coach Lee Hall likes to call them, swept their division Monday to be one of four undefeated teams in the eight-team championship bracket.

Oak Mountain has been 12-3 through All-Star play this season, beating Huffman, 18-6, in the first game of the World Series, then shutting out Starkville, Miss., 12-0, before beating Wills Park of Georgia, 14-4.

Winning pitchers were Sam Towery, Jake Byson and Carson Eddy.

“The three games we’ve played up here we played great defense and we’ve thrown a ton of strikes,” Hall said.

The Mini Mites are all small in size and play small ball, bunting a lot to put runners in position for thirdbaseman Eddy and catcher Hogan Edwards, who like to drive in runs from the three and four holes in the lineup, Hall said.

“We’re so small, when we play everybody they always ask, ‘Are you sure you’re not an 8-year-old team?’” Hall said.

Oak Mountain will play Morgan Park of Marietta, Ga. (3-0), to open the championship bracket play Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
