Three people have been transported to area hospitals after a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 31 South in Alabaster Tuesday.

Lt. Chad Burton, Alabaster Fire and Rescue public information officer, said one person was transported by ground to Shelby Baptist Medical with minor injuries. Two people were transported to UAB Hospital, with one having to be airlifted with severe injuries.

The names of the injured have not been released.

The accident occurred on U.S. 31 South just before the Shelby County 26 intersection at about 8 a.m. One vehicle was turning out of the Shelby County Treatment Center when the other vehicle struck it, said Deputy Chief Curtis Rigney of the Alabaster Police Department.

One of the vehicles landed in a ditch near the Treatment Center. Stalled motorists and Treatment Center employees looked on as rescue workers removed the passengers from the vehicle.

The Alabaster Police Department is investigating the accident.
