Target plans to host the 26th–annual National Night Out in Alabaster Aug. 4 beginning at 5 p.m.

The free event will take place in the Target parking lot at the Colonial Promenade. Organizers hope the event helps the people of Alabaster build strong relationships with local law enforcement. It also is a good time for families to come out and have a good time, those involved said.

“This gives the public an opportunity to be able to come up and ask any questions,” said Lt. Mike Jones of the Alabaster Police Department. “This is a good environment compared to when we are on patrol, and will make it so people are not as intimidated by the uniform.”

Free food and drinks will be provided by Target, Coca Cola, Bud’s Best Cookies, McDonalds, Frito Lay and Full Moon Bar-B-Que.

The National Night Out plans to have around 20 federal, state and local agencies attend, along with public officials, with hopes to build a better relationship between the community and its law enforcement.

Jones and fellow Alabaster officers are looking forward to the .

“We plan to bring the Alabaster department’s camper, our 4-wheeler, patrol cars, our truck and some evidence equipment,” Jones said. “The event is great for families and the kids love the vehicles there, especially the fire trucks.”

Police will also be fingerprinting children.

Along with the Alabaster police and fire department, members of the FBI, state troopers, sheriff department and law enforcement from the surrounding areas, such as Pelham and Helena, will also be there to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.

All the departments attending will bring their own vehicles and equipment to be on display for the community. A Lifesaver rescue helicopter, K-9 units, a marine patrol watercraft and ambulances are planned to be at the event.

The YMCA, Shelby County Humane Society, Family Connection and other community organizations will also be attending to answer questions.

”This is not only fun for the public, but for us, too.” Jones said. “We encourage officers to attend and meet the families, plus it’s nice to also see what other departments in the area are using.”

This year is the 26th–annual year of the National Night Out event, but only the third year the event has been celebrated in Alabaster. More than 37 million people participated all over the nation in the 2008 National Night Out.
