The city of Pelham did some summer cleaning July 23, raising $22,729 during a surplus sale and auction at the Water Works building.

The city cleared out property that had exceeded its useful life, including office equipment and numerous vehicles.

Mayor Don Murphy was the auctioneer for the event, which drew an estimated 500 people.

“It was a fun afternoon, and it gave me a chance to meet a lot of people from Pelham and other places,” Murphy said.

The money raised from the sale and auction will go towards the city’s general fund.

Murphy said in difficult economic times like these, any time you can add extra money while also clearing out property, it’s a good thing.

“We had surplus stuff gathering dust and rust,” Murphy said. “So you sell it, and get rid of it.”

Because of the success of the sale and auction, Murphy said the city will host similar sales of surplus property when needed.
