The Boys and Girls Club of Montevallo will launch an after-school program for children of working parents beginning Aug. 13 – the first day of the 2009-2010 school year.

The program will accept children ages 7-12 and meet 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Holsomback Park and Recreation Building, 420 Vine St., said Director Freda Shivers. The program will include snacks, “Power Hour” homework time, recreation and other activities.

“We’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting, and pushing and pushing and pushing for this,” Shivers said. “This is huge for so many parents.”

Registration forms are available at the club. Shivers said the program needs a minimum of 35 children, but will be able to serve 85 children. The program cost is $50 per month.

Shivers said the program is supported by program fees and private grants acquired by the Boys and Girls Club of Central Alabama. An advisory board has been created to lead additional fund-raising efforts.

Since its grand opening in June, the club has served 62 children through its summer program.

“It’s been a wonderful summer. The kids have been great and we try to keep the program fresh and fun for them,” Shivers said. “There’s been an awful lot of community support and it’s been really heartwarming.”
