Oak Mountain scrimmage with Walker cancelled

Oak Mountain High School football coach Jeff Harris had two opponents Friday night when his team stepped off the bus for a scrimmage at Walker High School.

Neither one was the Walker football team. Harris had bigger issues with the severe weather in the area and the swine flu bug, which is making its way through the halls of Walker High School.

As a result, Harris will have to wait one more week until the Eagles travel to Pelham to make his Oak Mountain debut.

“We were disappointed, but that’s life,” Harris said. “We talked with the Walker head coaches. They’ve had a lot of swine flu and their biggest region games are week one and week two. We’re just out of luck.”

Harris said the cancelled scrimmage may end up being a good thing for his team. The Eagles need some rest, Harris said.

“We’ll be able to get our legs back under us,” Harris said. “We’re looking forward to playing, but we needed a break.”
