Montevallo High School’s bragging rights in a football rivalry with Calera were short-lived.

After the Bulldogs picked up their first win against the Eagles in five years in 2008, Calera regained the upper hand Friday night with a 33-15 win over Montevallo.

Calera junior quarterback Brandon Wells was the story of the game as he passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another to give the Eagles a 20-7 lead at halftime.

Wells finished with 199 yards in total offense in the win, including 127 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air.

Nathan Langner added two field goals in the second half and Eugene Rodgers capped the scoring with a 9-yard touchdown run late in the game to seal the Eagles’ win.

“Winning a rivalry game is huge,” Wells said. “It was a big, big win. We’ve just stayed focused and worked hard in practice.”

Wells credited his offensive line, including mammoth tackle D’Antwone King, for sparking the Calera rushing attack. The Eagles went on a 16-play, 88-yard drive in the fourth quarter that resulted in a 28-yard field goal by Langner.

“I want to thank my offensive line,” Wells said. “Without them, we wouldn’t make any drives.”

Calera coach Scott Martin was successful in his debut with the Eagles. Martin, who coached at Spain Park last season, compared Wells to LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson, who played under Martin at Destrehan (La.) High School in 2007.

“(Brandon) makes our team go,” Martin said. “He can be really good. He’s got a great future ahead of him.”

Calera got on the board first with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Wells to Trent Posey late in the first quarter. The extra-point attempt by Langner was blocked. The Eagles struck again when Wells found Posey open for an 18-yard touchdown with 9:05 remaining in the second quarter.

Montevallo scored its first touchdown when Kevin Callender scrambled for a 15-yard touchdown run on a fourth down play. Brett Grey added the extra point. Calera closed the half with a 17-yard touchdown run by Wells on a fourth down with 1:24 remaining in the second quarter.

Langner had a 26-yard field goal to push the lead to 23-7 with 9:02 left in the third quarter. Brandon Lilly scored on a 5-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown and rushed in for the two-point conversion as the Bulldogs cut the lead to 23-15 midway through the third quarter.

Langner’s 28-yard field goal and Rodgers’ 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter capped the scoring in the game. Rodgers rushed for 192 yards and a touchdown in the victory.

Montevallo coach Mike Reynolds said his players weren’t in the best shape in the season opener. Reynolds, who was an assistant coach at Oak Mountain last season, had three players, including Callender, leave the game with cramps.

“We had a lot of players going both ways,” said Reynolds, “but that’s no excuse.”

“Calera outplayed us and we made a lot of mistakes. We’ve got to get in better shape and limit our miscues.”

Penalties were also a story in the game as the two teams combined for 160 penalty yards in the first half alone.
