Since last year, Alabama Telco Credit Union has begun implementing green initiatives to create a more eco-friendly environment for both their employees and members.

Vice President of Marketing Stanton Davis said protecting the environment is a company responsibility.

“From small acts like printing on both sides of paper to big promotions like giving members $5 for signing up for e-Statements, we feel it is our responsibility to do everything we can to protect our environment and in turn improve our economy,” Davis said.

Alabama Telco’s green efforts kicked into high gear with the creation of their eco-friendly tote bag for their 75th Anniversary Member Appreciation Week in January 2009.

Members received a special coupon book filled with offers and eco-friendly tips. They also received a custom-made eco-friendly tote bag, which is becoming an increasingly popular trend with consumers at grocery stores and retail outlets.

Other member-initiated efforts include promotions related to online services, such as Online Bill Payment and e-Statements.

“These services not only cut down on paper waste, but they are convenient and save members time and money. They serve our members’ needs with added perks for them and the environment,” Davis said.

For their internal efforts, Alabama Telco has made a conscious effort to cut down on energy usage with simple acts like turning off lights during work hours, recycling printer toner and paper, using scratch paper as note pads, providing recyclable shred-bins and e-mailing members about promotions and other news when feasible.

Alabama Telco’s newest green effort is teaming up with the MyGreenBirmingham.com as a presenting sponsor for their “My Green Home” giveaway. The giveaway will grant one lucky Birmingham resident a complete “green makeover” for their home.

“We’re very excited about being a part of this project as we continue to work toward improving our environment and the interests of our members,” Davis said. The My Green Home winner will be featured in Birmingham Magazine this fall. For more details on the My Green Birmingham giveaway, visit MyGreenBirmingham.com.
