A week after opening the season on the road with a loss, Coosa Valley opened the home portion of their schedule with a bang as they rolled to a 34-7 victory over Lyman Ward.

Coosa Valley wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as they jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead. Quarterback Phillip Neal hooked up with John Bullen for a 38-yard touchdown and Neal added the extra point to give Coosa Valley a quick 7-0 lead.

After holding Lyman Ward, Coosa Valley got right back to work as Will Bullen carried the ball in from six yards out and Neal added the extra point again to give Coosa Valley a 14-0 lead. Neal completed a 37-yard pass to Hunter Winslett to set up the Bullen’s run.

John Bullen added another touchdown run, this one from eights yards out, to finish off the scoring in the half with Coosa Valley leading 20-0.

Coosa Valley head coach Vince DiLorenzo praised the way his offense came out in the first half.

“Phillip Neal had a great game passing and running the ball,” DiLorenzo said. “The offensive line played great and gave him time to make some plays.”

The second half saw the Coosa Valley defense pick up the pressure and helped lead to the final two scores of the night. Sam Bullard intercepted a pass, which led a Phillip Neal 7-yard touchdown run, and Daniel Kennedy intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to close out the scoring for the Rebels.

DiLorenzo also liked what he saw from his defense.

“I was very pleased with the way we came out on defense,” he said. “This was the best we hit and attacked on defense since I’ve been here. We were able to limit our mistakes and do what we needed to do.”

Coosa Valley, which rolled up 312 yards of offense, was led on by Phillip Neal who passed for 127 yards with a touchdown and added 112 yards on the ground with a touchdown. On defense, Coosa Valley was led Bud Bliss with 10 tackles, Ricky Ellison with nine tackles and Garrett McMillan with seven tackles.

Coosa Valley improves their overall record to 1-1 and region record to 1-0. Next week Coosa Valley travels to Cornerstone in a key region contest.
