Cornerstone Christian School had to wait an extra week to open the 2009 football season after having an open date the first week. The wait was worth it as Cornerstone defeated Dixie Academy 25-7 on Friday night.

The extra time without a game showed early as Cornerstone started off slow and was plagued by turnovers, penalties and sloppy play. Even through the miscues, Cornerstone was able to play solid defense on the night.

Cornerstone head coach Tim Smith is concerned about the way his team played overall.

“We’ve got to get better in a hurry,” Smith said.

Time isn’t on the Cornerstone’s side as they play host to Coosa Valley in a rivalry game this Friday night.

“It’s a big game and we will be ready for it,” Smith said.

Cornerstone was led on offense by Colton Wingard, who rushed for three touchdowns on the night. The touchdowns came on runs of two, eight and three yards. Josh Anderson added the other touchdown for the Chargers with a 38-yard touchdown run.

Cornerstone’s defense was led Daniel Michael and Trey Benson, who recorded seven tackles each.

Quarterback Lance Benton went down with a hand injury before the half and was replaced by Adrian Young, who did an outstanding job leading the Chargers’ offense to three scores in the second half. Stephan Young came up with a key interception in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Cornerstone.
