Montevallo will be featured at the Shelby County Fair in Columbiana on Thursday, Sept. 24.

At 6 p.m. Thursday night, the Montevallo High School and Middle School choruses will perform. Many of the estimated 70 singers are new to the program this year.

The MHS FFA archery team will put on a demonstration at 6:30 p.m. At 7:15 p.m., there will be a show by the award-winning FFA Rising Suns string band led by instructor Keith Adair.

Mayor Ben McCrory will give a brief city update and introduce the new high school and middle school principals, as well as the elementary principal.

This is the 60th-annual Shelby County Fair and is a true old-fashioned fair with livestock shows, canning, baked goods, produce, needlecrafts, horticulture and art and photography displays and competitions.

There will also be booths sponsored by civic and government agencies, religious groups and schools. The fair is one of the few surviving authentic county fairs in Alabama.

“It’s more important than ever today that we have real county fairs where kids can learn where our resources come from, how they are prepared, used and recycled,” said Adair. “Lots of the kids never have an opportunity to learn that.”

John E. Jones has been involved in the sponsoring Kiwanis Club for more than 50 years. He is justly proud of the reputation of the fair and of the fact that the proceeds from the fair go to the Shelby County schools.

Adair’s sister, acclaimed recording artist Tina Adair and her band will perform in a 90-minute show on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Her first country album sold more than 20,000 copies and broke the Top 20 on the American charts.
