It flooded all night Friday night, and that was just the Marengo Academy offense.

The Longhorns sent the visiting Kingwood Lions back to Shelby County with a 41-0 loss.

“It was a good one for our guys,” Marengo Academy head coach Robby James said of the win. “It was a fun game for us. Everybody got to play.”

Hope was all but lost for the Lions on their first drive, which resulted in a punt.

Marengo Academy took the ensuing possession down the field in only four plays, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Matt Etheridge only two minutes into the game.

The Lions didn’t know it at the time, but their fate had just been sealed.

After the Horns recovered a Lion fumbled punt, Rabe Hale took the next play 12 yards to paydirt, giving Marengo Academy a 12-0 lead five minutes into the first.

Kingwood fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Alan Flowers took the ball 41 yards to the endzone.

Hale dove through for the two-point conversion stretching the lead to 20-0.

Zack Smith thundered 57 yards as the remaining 10 seconds ticked off the clock in the half, giving the Horns a 27-0 lead at the half.

It proved more of the same for the Longhorns in the second half as Flowers plucked a Kingwood pass and returned it 55 yards for his second touchdown of the night.

“Alan had a good game,” James said of Flowers. “He’s been playing well for us all year.”

The Longhorns amassed 163 yards on the ground in the first 24 minutes.

Marengo Academy held the Lions to less than 10 yards in total offense.

By night’s end, the Longhorns had rushed the ball 22 times for 266 yards and held the Lions to just 55 yards of total offense while forcing five Kingwood turnovers.

The Longhorns head on the road to East Memorial Christian Thursday night.

“That’ll be a big one for us,” James said. “We need to win that game if we’re going to get in the playoffs.”

Kingwood Christian (0-4) returns home to face non-region opponent Bessemer Academy Sept. 24. Kingwood coach Vince Elliott is still searching for his first win.
