The Pelham City Council delayed a vote on the 2010 budget until Tuesday during Monday night’s meeting.

The council recessed Monday’s meeting until Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

During Monday’s meeting, the council did discuss concerns with several department heads over items in the budget.

Council member Bill Meadows asked Library Director Barbara Roberts and Parks and Recreation Director Billy Crandall about several line items.

Meadows asked Roberts about money in the reserve library fund, while also discussing the declining book allocation funds in the budget for the last five years.

“The library is one of nine in the state that is a Blue Ribbon Library, and people look for that,” Meadows said.

Meadows also asked Crandall about the city’s concession stand operation budget.

Meadows said the city should look into having parents run the stand, as was done for many years at ballparks across the state.

Crandall said with more stringent health department regulations and insurance liabilities, it made more sense to put the stand in the hands of fewer people.

Mayor Don Murphy spoke before the meeting recessed, as he addressed employees’ concerns over higher benefit and insurance costs.

“The benefit package y’all have is a darn good benefit package,” Murphy said, noting the nearly $6 million the city contributes toward benefits and insurance. “I don’t think you can find many more places that pay what we pay.”
