Cornerstone Christian School started out slowly but finished strong in routing Chambers Academy 34-7 Friday night. With the win, Cornerstone improved to 4-0 overall and in region play.

Cornerstone could get very little going in the first quarter as Chambers Academy was able to stop several Charger drives. Things got even worse for Cornerstone when fullback Colton Wingard went down near the end of the quarter with a knee injury and was unable to return.

“It was an unusual play where he got his legs cut out from under him,” Cornerstone coach Tim Smith said. “We’ll have to wait tomorrow and see how bad it is.”

Cornerstone wasted little time getting things going from there. Josh Anderson took a handoff and scampered 50 yards for the Chargers’ first touchdown of the night. KaDarius King added the extra point to put the Chargers up 7-0.

On Cornerstone’s next possession, LaDarius King took it in from 12 yards out but the extra-point attempt was no good. Lance Benton hooked up with J.V. McKinney for a 34-yard touchdown pass and the ensuing extra point gave Cornerstone a 20-0 halftime lead.

LaDarius King continued his scoring in the second half with two touchdown runs. The first came on an 8-yard run in the third quarter and he followed that with a 66-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Cornerstone finished the night with 344 rushing and 86 yards passing for a season high 430 yards. The Chargers were led on the ground by LaDarius King, who finished the night with 188 yards on 15 carries. Lance Benton was 3-of-4 passing for 86 yards and a touchdown.

The Chargers’ defense, which has only given up 14 points in their four games this year, was led by Daniel Michael with 13 tackles and Josh Anderson with 12 tackles.

Cornerstone is in action again next Friday night as they host South Montgomery Christian Academy for homecoming.
