From painting to health screenings, the Alabaster Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a handful of senior-oriented events over the next few weeks.

The trio of senior offerings will begin Oct. 12 with a basic watercolor painting class from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the Alabaster Senior Center on 15th Avenue Southwest.

The cost for the painting class will be $15, which includes all supplies necessary for the event.

Recreation officials also will be holding a flu shot clinic Oct. 15 from 9-noon at the Senior Center.

Nashville-based HealthSpring will organize the clinic, and the shots will be free with most insurance plans.

Oct. 20 will mark the first department-sponsored heath and wellness expo, which will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Heardmont Park Senior Center off Cahaba Valley Road.

During the wellness expo, health care providers with Brookwood Hospital and other local health centers will provide free wellness checks to anyone older than 55 “actively seeking to improve their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.”

Alabaster and Heardmont Park officials also will be giving away door prizes to those who attend.

“We are excited about partnering together to offer this event to seniors living in the Shelby County area,” said Alicia Walters, a certified therapeutic recreation specialist with the Alabaster Senior Center. “We believe it is our responsibility to promote health and wellness at every age.”
