Cornerstone Christian School continued its winning ways Oct. 9, defeating Sumter Academy 40-6.

The only doubt of the night was if the game would be able to be finished after a 45-minute lightning delay shortly after kickoff.

Cornerstone came out of the delay firing on all cylinders as LaDarius King took a handoff and scampered in from 23 yards out for a touchdown. KaDarius King added the extra point to give the Chargers an early 7-0 lead.

Sumter Academy was able to score on its next possession on a quarterback keeper from three yards out. The Chargers’ defense came up big as they were able to deny Sumter’s two-point conversion attempt.

The Chargers next touchdown came on a perfect pass from quarterback Lance Benton. Patrick Shaw was able to haul in the throw from Benton in the front corner off the end zone for the score and put the Chargers up 14-6.

LaDarius King would finish off the scoring for Cornerstone in the first half as he took it in from 39 yards out. KaDarius King’s extra-point kick gave the Chargers a 20-6 lead heading into the half.

Quarterback Lance Benton used his feet to help Cornerstone score on its next two possessions. Benton would score on runs of 1 and 5 yards in the third quarter to help the Chargers expand their lead to 34-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

KaDarius King would finish off the scoring on the night as he scored from four yards out to give the Chargers a 40-6 victory.

Cornerstone coach Tim Smith was proud the way his team played on the night.

“We’re getting better every week,” Smith said. “You really couldn’t tell tonight because off all the mud from the rain. Offensively, we really played well the second half. We ran the football and Lance Benton continues to throw the ball so much better. We just have to continue to keep getting better to be successful.”

Cornerstone was led offensively by LaDarius King, who had 11 rushes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Lance Benton completed 4-of-5 passes for 66 yards with a touchdown and added two touchdowns on the ground.

Defensively, Josh Anderson continued his spectacular play on defense with a team-high 11 tackles. Clayton Halbert added nine tackles for the Chargers.

With the win, Cornerstone improves to 6-0 on the season. Oct. 16, the Chargers host Abbeville Christian as they honor their seniors in their last regular season home game of the year.
