Spain Park snaps two-game losing streak with win over Gardendale

Following losses to Class 6A, Region 6 heavyweights Hoover and Vestavia Hills, Spain Park High School rebounded with a 49-7 win Friday night over Region 6 foe Gardendale.

Tamar Mickens rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback Graham Craig threw five touchdown passes as the Jaguars rolled.

The Jaguars got on the scoreboard first with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Craig to running back DaRon Smith in the first quarter. Daniel Watkins caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Craig and Smith added a 17-yard touchdown reception from Craig to push the Spain Park lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter with Justin Lumpkin’s three successful extra-point attempts.

Watkins caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Craig and Smith reeled in a 17-yard reception for his third touchdown of the game in the second quarter as the Jaguars’ lead expanded to 35-0 at halftime.

Mickens scored on a 10-yard run in the third quarter and a 70-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for Spain Park. Lumpkin was successful on all seven extra-point attempts.

Spain Park finished with nearly 500 yards in total offense and picked up 14 first downs in the win. Craig completed 11-of-15 passes for 229 yards and five touchdowns.

Mickens led the Jaguars (6-2, 5-2 Class 6A, Region 6) with 116 rushing yards.
