It’s been quite a while since the Thompson High School football team enjoyed a Friday night.

The Warriors celebrated once again on homecoming night after a 20-12 win Friday night over Oak Mountain, which snapped a nine-game losing streak dating back to the 2008 season.

“It feels a lot better on this side, I can tell you that,” said Thompson head coach Brian Maner. “I’m extremely proud of our kids.”

Maner can thank his offensive line and running back Monterious Drake, who helped Thompson (1-7, 1-6 Class 6A, Region 6) erase a 12-6 halftime deficit with two touchdown runs in the second half.

Drake’s 14-yard run up the middle early in the fourth quarter gave the Warriors a 13-12 lead, and his 63-yard scamper between the hash marks with 2:53 remaining pretty much sealed the win.

Paul Angel’s pass to Rico Dunn on fourth-and-9 at the Warriors’ 21-yard line fell incomplete, which allowed Thompson quarterback David Bria to take a knee on the last play of the game.

“I wasn’t expecting to break it,” Drake said of his 63-yard scoring run. “I just tried my best and got to the end zone.”

Oak Mountain (3-5, 3-4 Class 6A, Region 6) got on the scoreboard first with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Angel to Davis Dudchock with 4:47 left in the first quarter. Jonathan Bush added a 35-yard touchdown reception from Angel midway through the second quarter to push the Eagles’ lead to 12-0 after both extra-point attempts were unsuccessful.

Kenny Johnson caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Bria with 12 seconds remaining in the second quarter to cut the Oak Mountain lead to 12-6. Zac Oglesby’s extra-point attempt failed after his kick bounced off the left upright.

Drake’s two touchdown runs in the second half completed the Warriors’ comeback.

Maner said Drake and the offensive line were the difference in the game.

“The offensive line did a great job,” Maner said. “Monterius just ran hard and that’s what we expect from him.”

Drake said the win was a “relief” and he is glad he can celebrate with teammates after a win for the first time in his senior season.

“It feels good to finally get a win this season,” Drake said.

Oak Mountain coach Jeff Harris said he thought the Eagles were complacent after a 12-6 halftime lead.

“I think we played hard at times; at other times we were satisfied with where we were,” Harris said. “We didn’t smell blood and go for the finish.”

Thompson hosts Vestavia Hills, while Oak Mountain travels to Spain Park on Oct. 23.
