The City Council approved a resolution Monday night to donate a total of $119,999.60 to the four local schools for academic purposes based upon total teacher units.

Pelham High School will receive $42,352.80, Riverchase Middle School will receive $23,193.20, Valley Intermediate School will receive $24,705.80 and Valley Elementary School will receive $29,747.80.

The donations were based upon a unit value of $504.20 per teacher unit.

In the past, the money was given to the Shelby County Schools System to pay for each school’s total water and sewer bills.

Last year, the city council revamped the way the money is allocated by giving the donations directly to each school.

“It’s been moved to the start of the year so schools can move forward,” council member Steve Powell said.

Mayor Don Murphy will present checks to each principal at the next council meeting on Nov. 2.

In other council news:

— Murphy announced construction work on the Shelby County 52 bridge over Interstate 65 has begun.

The construction was originally scheduled to the close the bridge for a weekend, but that plan has been cancelled.

Narrowing of the bridge will be done this week from 11 p.m-6 a.m. each night. One lane of Shelby County 52 will be closed each night.

The project is expected to take approximately three months from the narrowing through the raising process.

— The council approved a resolution to make repairs to the storm drains on Stonehaven Trail.

The council authorized the expenditure of $35,811.20 to Byrd Contractors, while the repair expenses to date are $123,534.02.

The money for the project is being paid from the city’s capital improvement fund, which currently has a balance of $428,218.73.

The project will not affect the 2010 general fund operating budget.

— The council authorized Murphy to enter into an agreement with the Alabama Youth Ballet Company to make a donation of $1,500 to provide cultural and arts services to the community through the annual Nutcracker ballet production.
