Calera puts Southside-Selma away early

Calera High School junior quarterback Brandon Wells accounted for six touchdowns as he led the Eagles to a 61-26 win Friday over visiting Southside-Selma.

Wells’ 48-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Hyde and 45-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave Calera a 14-0 lead. Eugene Rodgers capped the scoring in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Wells added a 44-yard touchdown pass and a 26-yard touchdown pass to Hyde in the second quarter to extend the Eagles’ lead to 34-0 before Southside-Selma finally got on the scoreboard with a 4-yard touchdown run.

Wells capped the scoring in the first half with a 1-yard touchdown run to give Calera a 41-6 lead at halftime.

Wells closed out his night with a 63-yard touchdown pass to Hyde in the third quarter to push the lead to 48-6 before backups entered the game for the Eagles. Zack Reneau threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Alek Kauffman and added a 7-yard touchdown run as Calera extended its lead to 61-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Southside-Selma capped the scoring with two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Calera finished with 561 yards of total offense in the victory. Wells completed 8-of-10 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Reneau completed 5-of-7 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Hyde caught five passes for 204 yards and four scores.

Rodgers rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Adam Winterbottom led the defense with eight tackles.

Calera (7-2) closes out the regular season Oct. 29 as the Eagles host Chelsea.
