After an emotional win last week, the Thompson High School Warriors were looking to continue that energy as the seniors played their last game at Larry Simmons field.

A valiant effort was lost on this night as Vestavia Hills continued its roll toward the playoffs with a 45-21 victory.

Kenny Johnson pounced on a fumble in the first quarter, giving the Warriors the ball at their own 25-yard line and stopping a Vestavia drive.

Turnovers have plagued the Warriors all season and this night was no different. Thompson ran just five plays from scrimmage before David Bria’s pass was intercepted. Two plays later, the Rebels punched the ball in for a touchdown.

Thompson gave up four interceptions on the evening, which resulted in 24 points for the Rebels.

On their second possession, the Warriors drove 74 yards on 10 plays for their first touchdown of the game. Bria connected with Deshaunta Bivins for the 4-yard strike and Zac Oglesby added the extra point.

Trailing 24-7 at the in the third quarter, the Warriors again showed promise as they moved the ball down the field. A big run by Monterious Drake and a 14-yard pass play from Bria to Jon Mwaituka set the Warriors up on the Rebels 6-yard line. Bria called his own number this time and took it in for the score. Oglesby’s extra point would make it 24-14 and get the crowd back into the game.

Vestavia scored on three of its next four possessions, which put the game out of reach for the Warriors.

Still fighting late in the fourth quarter, Drake took a handoff from Bria and bulldozed his way through the line and broke away for a 52-yard touchdown run. Drake finished the night with 12 carries for 115 yards.

The Warriors (1-8) close their season next Friday night on the road against Northridge.
