Vincent High School football coach Dwight Spradley and his Yellow Jackets didn’t win any money after a thrilling 15-14 win Friday night in overtime over American Christian Academy.

The prize for the victory was a Class 2A playoff berth.

“You would have thought we won the lottery,” Spradley said.

Ben McKinney scored two touchdowns and caught a pass from Brett Frizzell on a reverse pass for a two-point conversion in overtime to lead the Yellow Jackets to the win in Vincent’s final Class 2A, Region 5 game.

American Christian scored on a 15-yard run in the second quarter and added the extra point to take a 7-0 lead at halftime.

McKinney capped a 23-play, 80-yard opening drive in the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:23 left to play in the quarter. Frizzell’s extra point tied the game.

American Christian scored on its third play in overtime and opted for the extra point to take a 14-7 lead. McKinney scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 14-13 before Spradley called for the game-winning trick play.

“We’ve had trouble kicking extra points all year,” Spradley said. “We pretty much knew if we scored we were going for two. We didn’t want the kids to lose a game on something we don’t do very well.”

The Yellow Jackets lined up for the conversion attempt at the 3-yard line and planned to let McKinney try to pound his way into the end zone on a quarterback keeper.

“We just ran it right at them for most of the night,” Spradley said. “In overtime, we were just going to run it right at them again.”

An illegal procedure penalty changed the plan. From the 8-yard line, McKinney pitched the ball to Frizzell, who first looked to run it in, before he tossed it back to McKinney in the end zone to seal the win.

“Our kids deserved it,” Spradley said. “We’ve had some adversity and injuries. The kids have worked really hard.”

The Yellow Jackets limited American Christian to 145 yards in total offense. Vincent gained 159 yards in the contest.

McKinney led Vincent (5-4) with 103 rushing yards on 27 carries. Juwan Rogers added 24 yards on nine carries and had three receptions for 15 yards.

Collin Spradley led the defense with 11 tackles. Rogers added nine tackles.
