Over the past several years, members of the First Baptist Church of Alabaster have been aiding dozens of local families in need while spreading God’s message.

Through the First Baptist Alabaster food ministry, church members work to provide food for families who may not be able to afford it. While working with the families, the volunteers use the program as a forum for sharing God’s love, explained project coordinator Michelle Weaver.

“I used to direct a project like this in Florida, and when I got here I started praying and asking what God wanted me to do with my life,” Weaver said. “It is a ministry, so we do minister and pray with the people we help.

“Of course, it’s not required that they listen and pray with us. But we’ve never had someone turn us down,” Weaver added. “Everyone needs help with something, and people are always willing to pray with us about it.”

When the program began almost a decade ago, church volunteers were helping about 20 people each month. Now, the number has grown to more than 200 per month, Weaver said.

Weaver attributed the rising demand to the nation’s current economic climate, but said the church has kept pace with the demand.

“We have never had a shortage of food. Our church members and other people in the community have been very generous,” Weaver said. “Jesus said ‘if they’re hungry, give them food. If they’re thirsty, give them water.’ That’s what we’re trying to do.

“But we are looking for businesses or organizations to help us get more food on our shelves,” she added. “We rely solely on donations.”

Church members typically distributes food on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, and accepts donations and volunteers every day.
