The Internal Revenue Service is seeking to return thousands of dollars of tax refund checks to 54 Shelby County residents.

The national agency is holding a total of $68,117 in unclaimed refund checks, and is urging the check owners to contact the IRS as soon as possible.

“The IRS tried to send refunds to the names below, but the checks were returned as undeliverable,” IRS Media Specialist Dan Boone wrote in a press release. “The IRS tried unsuccessfully to contact them, and now IRS is allowed to publically disclose the names in hopes that the check owners will see their names in the media, or someone who knows how to contact them will.”

The average refund amount for the unclaimed Shelby County checks is more than $1,200, Boone wrote.

Alabaster residents Mark Green, Connie Burns, Clintson Sinkfield, Melody Bivins, Donald McCarty, Stewart Wilson, Rosa Landaverde, Anabel Velasquez Sanchez and Zepahua Garcia are on the agency’s unclaimed check list.
