The Calera City Council honored a longtime city fire chief Nov. 16 by naming Calera’s main fire station in his honor.

The council unanimously agreed to name the city’s No. 1 fire station Tommy H. Moon Fire Station, in honor of the former chief who served with the department for more than 33 years before his death Oct. 24. Signage at the fire department soon will display Moon’s name forever.

“Not many things have bothered me as much as the passing of my grandson and the passing of Tommy Moon,” said Calera Mayor George Roy. “He was certainly devoted to the city; not only at the fire station, but in any way he could.

“This is a very fitting honor,” Roy added.

The naming announcement came shortly after the council passed a resolution honoring his contributions to the Calera Fire Department, and declaring his death a “great loss to the city.”

“Over the last five months of his life, he got to learn what he really meant to the community,” said Hilda Moon, Tommy Moon’s wife. “He was given time to know how much he was appreciated by the entire city.”
