Alabaster’s Kumon Math and Reading Center recently partnered with Shelby Emergency Assistance to bring books to area children in need.

In October, students at the learning center organized a book drive to commemorate National Book Month. During the drive, the students collected more than 120 books, which will be donated to county children facing temporary family crises.

“We believe that all children have unlimited potential, and through the gift of giving a book we hope to bring enjoyment to a family in transition,” said Lorraine Scoma, director of the learning center. “The book drive educated our students on the significance of giving back to the community.”

Many of the donated books were on Kumon’s recommended reading list, which is composed of many award-winning books from several genres.

“These books will bring comfort to a family in need; especially during the holiday season,” said Hettie Wagner, director of social services at Shelby Emergency Assistance. “We thank Kumon for their dedication to the Alabaster community.”
