Central Alabama United Way receives $970,000 in funding

United Way of Central Alabama recently announced that the organization has been awarded $973,584 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

At a recent news conference, Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala., presented a check representing the grant funds to United Way of Central Alabama.

UWCA will distribute $50,000 to 11 organizations throughout Alabama to strengthen their communitities’ ability to help hard working families gain financial stability.

“United Way is working with non-profit and community organizations to expand financial services available to families struggling to get by,” said Drew A. Langloh, President and CEO of United Way of Central Alabama. “This grant will help us build the capacity of our partners to provide services that include free tax preparation, mortgage foreclosure mitigation, financial education, and savings programs.”

The funding is part of $46 million awarded to 84 grantees under the Strengthening Communities Fund, which was created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The purpose of the grants is to improve the ability of non-profit organizations to promote the economic recovery of people with low incomes.

United Way of Central Alabama is the only non-profit organization in Alabama to receive funding for the Non-profit Capacity Building Program.

Under this program, United Way of Central Alabama, in partnership with One-Economy NeighborWorks, will provide 10 community development organizations across the state with capacity building measures to improve services to people who need jobs and opportunities to secure healthier, more prosperous futures.

United Way of Central Alabama has built statewide collaboration relationships as part of the United Way Financial Stability Partnership of Alabama effort.

The program is engaged in significant efforts to address the needs of Alabama’s economically challenged communities.
