Think of charities this year

Most Shelby County residents are busy making their holiday shopping lists and checking them twice, just like Santa.

This year, don’t forget to include on your list the many Shelby County charitable organizations in need.

Our challenging economy has been particularly tough on non-profit groups that depend on the generosity of others to continue their good works.

One of those groups in need is SafeHouse of Shelby County, which provides help to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Each year, SafeHouse raises money in early December to give the women, men and their children who receive services the opportunity to shop for gifts for their loved ones.

Without this opportunity, most of them would have no gifts for the holidays.

SafeHouse is experiencing significant increases in the number of people seeking services. However, they have collected significantly less money during this year’s campaign than last.

Many other groups and organizations that provide much-needed services are having similar experiences.

When you plan your Christmas spending, please remember those who help the less fortunate among us. The greater reward will be yours.
