The Alabama Independent School Association All-Star football game had a heavy Shelby County presence, as seven local players led the East team to a 33-27 win Thursday night at Stanley-Jensen Stadium in Prattville.

Cornerstone Christian School senior running back LaDarius King carried the ball five times for 36 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Cornerstone senior receiver J.V. McKinney caught one pass for 12 yards in the win.

Coosa Valley Academy senior Bud Bliss and Cornerstone senior Colton Wingard paved the way on the offensive line for the East, as they opened holes all night for the running game.

Defensively for the East, Cornerstone senior Trey Benson contributed two quarterback sacks and finished with three tackles on the night. Teammate Patrick Shaw added four tackles and a pass breakup and Coosa Valley senior Ricky Ellison added four tackles.

Cornerstone Christian coach Tim Smith was one of the defensive coaches for the East squad. Smith had a lot of praise for the local players.

“They all played great and represented our area very well,” Smith said. “It was a lot of fun being with all the players, and the coaches were trying to make some great memories for them.”

Cornerstone senior Colton Wingard echoed Smith’s sentiments.

“It is a great honor to be selected for the all-star game,” Wingard said. “It was a lot of fun getting to be on the same team as some that I’ve played against the last four years.”
