Oak Mountain grapplers top defending state champs

Ten Oak Mountain High School wrestlers won their individual matches to help the Eagles top defending Class 6A champion Vestavia Hills 44-24 on the mat Dec. 9.

Oak Mountain (11-1) dominated in the smallest and largest weight classes.

Jake Smith earned a 6-3 decision over the Rebels’ Alex Whitehead in the 103-pound match. Oak Mountain’s Jesse Smith picked up a 7-2 decision over John Kabase in the 112-pound match. Jacob Parker pinned his 119-pound Vestavia foe Joe Timberlake, while University of Virginia wrestling signee Tanner Moon earned a 17-2 technical fall decision over the Rebels’ Matthew Thomas in the 125-pound match.

Reid Bishop, Oak Mountain’s 135-pounder, picked up a 7-3 decision over Philip Cato.

Jared Woodall pinned his 160-pound Vestavia opponent Harrison Hill. Justin Woodall pinned the Rebels’ Dalton Campbell in the 171-pound match. Adam Beaton picked up a 16-1 technical fall decision over Vestavia’s Chase Thompson.

Oak Mountain 215-pounder Josh Greer earned a 13-4 major decision over the Rebels’ Sean Griffin, while Whit Whitfield earned a 4-2 decision over Vestavia’s David Simmons.
