Heavy rains flood county roads

Heavy overnight rainfall caused flooding problems in some Shelby County communities Dec. 18.

Some areas of the county received more than 2 inches of rain in less than 24 hours, which led to water over roads, flooded drainage ditches and difficulty for some drivers commuting to work.

County and city road crews placed warning signs and flashing hazard lights along some roads, including Alabama 70 and Shelby County 47, warning drivers of the flooded streets.

“We have had some standing water kind of scattered throughout the county,” said Scott Holladay, Federal Aid and Infrastructure Manager with the Shelby County Highway Department. “But we don’t have any major highway closings this morning.

“Luckily, when it’s standing water like that, it usually subsides pretty quickly,” Holladay added.
