Cornerstone senior reaches 1,000 points in Holiday tournament

J.V. McKinney put his name in Cornerstone history by scoring his 1,000th career point as he led the Chargers to a 74-55 region victory over Abbeville Christian, which was the first of three wins for the Chargers in the Holiday Tournament at Cornerstone Christian School and Coosa Valley Academy Dec. 28-29.

The milestone is even more impressive as McKinney only needed 37 games to reach the mark. Former Charger Ty Youngblood is the only other player at Cornerstone to score 1,000 career points.

McKinney scored a team-high 37 points, Stephen Bulger added eight points and Auston Wingard came off the bench with six points to lead Cornerstone to victory.

Cornerstone 46, Dixie 26

Cornerstone would hold the visiting Dixie Academy Rebels to only 11 second-half points on its way to a 46-26 region victory.

J.V. McKinney would lead the way for the Chargers with 23 points and Kendall Moore would add eleven points.

Cornerstone coach Tim Smith praised the play of his team.

“Colton Wingard and Stephen Bulger hit the boards hard for us,” Smith said. “Clayton Halbert and Auston Wingard came off the bench and played really well on the day.”

Cornerstone 69, Ashford 31

Cornerstone jumped out to a 40-8 half-time lead and would cruise to a 69-31 region victory over Ashford Academy. The Chargers remain undefeated with the win, improving to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the region.

J.V. McKinney would lead the way, scoring 22 points. Stephen Bulger would add 12 points, Kendall Moore added nine points and Colton Wingard added eight points for the victory.

Coosa Valley boys

Coosa Valley 75, Abbeville 62

Gage Holmes led the Rebels (6-7) with 30 points. John Bullen added 20 points and Zaid Kayyali finished with 14 points.

Dixie 43, Coosa Valley 41

Sam Bullard led the Rebels with 13 points. Gage Holmes added 11 points.

Coosa Valley 71, Ashford 43

John Bullen led the Rebels with 23 points. Gage Holmes added 19 points and Hunter Winslett chipped in 11 points.

Cornerstone girls

Cornerstone 30, Abbeville 27

Kailey Goodwin scored eleven points and dished out four assists in leading Cornerstone to a 30-27 region victory over Abbeville Christian.

Nichole Davis added eight points and had five steals.

Cornerstone 47, Dixie 31

Cornerstone would outscore Dixie 21-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 47-31 region victory.

Jana Armstrong would lead the way for Cornerstone with ten points and four rebounds. Nichole Davis and Kailey Goodwin added nine points each for the Lady Chargers in the victory.

Cornerstone 46, Ashford 19

Cornerstone Christian’s Lady Charger won their game in two days, defeating Ashford Academy 46-19. Cornerstone would outscore Ashford 29-9 in the second half in improving to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in region play.

Kailey Goodwin would lead the way for Cornerstone with 12 points and six rebounds. Nichole Davis would add ten points and Chelsey Dunnaway added seven points and eight rebounds in the Charger victory.

Coosa Valley girls

Coosa Valley 40, Dixie 18

Jordan Smiley led the Rebels with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Coosa Valley 48, Ashford 37

Lauren Archer led the Rebels with 23 points and seven rebounds. Kaylan Rich added 10 points and eight boards.
