An Alabaster physician recently joined an exclusive group of vein specialists when he earned certification from the American Board of Phlebology.

Dr. Arthur James, a surgeon at the Alabaster office of Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery of Alabama, earned board certification in June 2009, and joined one of only 412 board certified phlebologists in the nation.

Less than 1 percent of phlebology professionals in the country are certified by the American Board of Phlebology, according to a board press release.

“It is with great pride that we announce this accomplishment by Dr. James,” read the release. “His certification with the American Board of Phlebology is a direct reflection of his skill, knowledge and experience in providing quality patient care, and his continued commitment to the advancement of vein care.”

Phlebologists specialize in diagnosing and treating vein disorders and diseases, such as deep vein thrombosis and blood clots.

In addition to the American Board of Phlebology, James is also a member of American College of Surgeons, American College of Phlebology, Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

“It was tough,” James wrote in an e-mail. “More elite is to be one of the few triple board-certified doctors in the country.”

To become board certified, surgeons must meet certain training or experience qualifications, meet continuing education requirements and pass a rigorous certification exam. The board certifies surgeons for 10 years, but the medical professionals must continually work to maintain their certification.

James has been practicing at the Alabaster facility for 10 years, and is also board certified in cardiovascular and general surgery.
