Funeral service for John Erskine Rice, age 82, of Shelby was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Bolton Funeral Home. Brother Rodger Hamaker officiated.
Burial followed in Spring Creek Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at the funeral home.
Rice, who passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, was born Feb. 17, 1927, in Shelby County.
Rice was a veteran of World War II, serving as a paratrooper and a mason. He retired from U.S. Steel after 33 years of service and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ailene Rice; sons, David Farrington (Georgiann), Robert Rice (Janice) and James A. Rice; daughters, Eunice Woerner (Douglas) and Karen Ingram; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Edna Earl (William F.) Bean, a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
