Maurine Smith Hoagland, age 85, of Saginaw and formerly of Blount County, died Thursday evening, Jan. 7, 2010. She was born Oct. 27, 1924, in Keystone in northwestern Shelby County.
Mrs. Hoagland retired in 1988 as Postmaster at the Saginaw Post Office and was a former editor of the Bama Postmaster newspaper. She was a charter member and treasurer of the Camp Branch-Saginaw Volunteer Fire Department, pianist for Bryan Memorial Presbyterian Church, a Girl Scouts leader and a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Mrs. Hoagland was preceded in death by her parents, William L. Smith and Constance Cost Smith; her husband of 56 years, Troy A. Hoagland; and her twin brother, Lawrence C. Smith.
Survivors include Mrs. Hoagland’s brother, Richard A. Smith of Huntsville; two daughters, Deanna H. Garrett (William R.) of Lynn Haven, Fla., and Sharon H. Rasco (Glenn H.) of Jasper, Ga.; six grandchildren, Caroline H. Deigert (Joseph), C. Richard Harkins (Regan), Suzanne H. Reese, Heath P. Rasco (Jessica), Kyle D. Rasco (Cassie) and Joshua G. Rasco; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham. The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, in Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham. Burial followed in Tidwell Cemetery in Allgood.
