A parking lot full of locally grown fruits and vegetables may become a Saturday morning staple this summer after the Calera City Council voted unanimously to allow a farmers’ market in the city.

The council approved the request during its Jan. 19 meeting after farmers’ market organizer Rebecca Krueger requested the city allow the event to be held in the Calera City Hall parking lot off Shelby County 25.

Krueger said if farmers’ market organizers were able to gather enough community support, they may start holding the Saturday markets in June.

“We really just wanted to present the idea to the council tonight before we vested ourselves in it further,” Krueger said. “Calera is a great central location to be able to do this community outreach event.”

Since the council approved the event, Krueger and other event organizers will begin gathering support for the farmers’ market, and likely will report back to the council in about a month, she said.

“We will hopefully be getting started in June,” Krueger said. “But we have a lot of preparation to do before that.”

In other business, the council also voted to allow the National Alliance on Mental Illness to use the Calera Community Center for meetings the second Thursday of every month from 6 p.m.-9 p.m.

The group must renew the use agreement with the city in six months, and will be responsible for care of the facility during the meetings.
