An Alabaster woman was recently named vice president of specialty services at Birmingham’s Children’s Health System.

The health system, which owns the 275-bed Children’s Hospital near UAB, promoted Alabaster resident Beverly Barrett to the position Jan. 15.

Before being named to the position, Barrett served as a staff nurse and department director of the hospital’s burn unit, director of critical care and emergency services and assistant vice president of specialty services.

Barrett has been working with the Children’s Health System since 1979. Through her new job, she will have a “close working relationship” with the hospital’s specialist doctors, she said.

“I am very excited to be able to do this. It’s definitely very challenging,” Barrett said. “Working with children is very rewarding. I love it, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

“I have a wonderful working relationship with the physicians,” she added. “Here, we do what is best for the child, and it’s always been that way. It’s not all about the money here.”

Barrett holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from UAB, an associate’s degree in nursing from Samford University and a master’s degree in public health from UAB. She is also a member of the American College of Health Care Executives, the Emergency Nurses Association, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses and the American Nurses Association.
