Shelby County boys sweep Calera

The second game of the season between the Shelby County High School boys’ basketball team and rival Calera was much closer than the first meeting.

In the end, the result was the same.

Jordan Simon led the Wildcats (15-5) with 21 points as Shelby County picked up an 83-81 win Jan. 26 on the road at Calera to sweep the season series between the two teams. Shelby County defeated Calera 103-65 on Dec. 9, 2009.

Freshman forward Tyler Madison added 19 points and 15 rebounds. Tae Lewis added 11 points and Kevin McNorton finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Deondre Haynes led Calera (12-13) with a game-high 35 points. Blayne Sumrall added 18 points and Wade Hyde finished with 12 points.

Oak Mountain 49, Pell City 34

Cary Baxter scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Eagles, who won a coin toss to host the Class 6A, Area 10 tournament Feb. 2-8.

Chris Pegg added nine points and seven rebounds. Mark Caldwell chipped in nine points. Drew Rosenberg led Oak Mountain (17-6) with eight assists.

Spain Park 38, Shades Valley 27

Matthew Bowerman led the Jaguars (20-8) with 10 points.

Thompson 56, Carver 44

Kenny Johnson led the Warriors (10-15) with 14 points. Josh Neville added 11 points.

Briarwood Christian 64, Chilton County 58

Jason Laatsch led the Lions (15-11) with 19 points. James Palmer added 17 points.

Chelsea 37, Shades Mountain Christian 24

D.D. Washington led the Hornets (10-16) with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Winterboro 58, Indian Springs 54

Charlie Simpson led Indian Springs (5-16) with 25 points in the loss Jan. 27. Hart Wilson added 15 points and seven rebounds.

Bibb County 78, Montevallo 40

The Bulldogs fell for the second time in a span of two days with the loss on the road.

Vincent 73, B.B. Comer 40

Keyon Wallace led the Yellow Jackets (17-7) with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Ben McKinney added 11 points. Vincent lost a coin toss and will travel to Shades Mountain Christian for the Class 2A, Area 9 tournament Feb. 5-8.

Appalachian 54, Westminster 32

The Knights (6-19, 2-8 in Class 1A, Area 9) wrapped up area play with the loss to Appalachian. Westminster will face a rematch with Appalachian in the Class 1A, Area 9 tournament Feb. 2 at Holy Family Catholic School in Birmingham.

Tuscaloosa Home Educators 53, Hope Christian 33

Terrance Moore led the Eagles (10-8) with 11 points. Adam Gurley added 10 points.

GIRLS

Oak Mountain 50, Pell City 27

Marisa Tomaszewski led the Eagles (22-5) with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cadie Renta added 10 points.

Thompson 64, Carver 54

KaDeisha Stowes led the Warriors (8-16) with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Asia Anchrum added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Courtnie Moncrief chipped in 10 points.

Minor 51, Pelham 45

Lindsey Young led the Panthers (15-10) with 19 points.

Briarwood Christian 72, Chilton County 19

Laura Gilbert led the Lions (15-9) with 13 points.

Shelby County 72, Calera 53

The Lady Wildcats swept the season series with Calera following the 19-point win.

Chelsea 35, Shades Mountain Christian 21

Sydney Arnold led the Hornets (12-14) with nine points and 14 rebounds. Lauren Swee also chipped in nine points.

Montevallo 57, Bibb County 31

The Bulldogs (18-7) won their second game in as many nights with the road win at Bibb County.

B.B. Comer 51, Vincent 36

Kiara Cohill led the Yellow Jackets (5-15) with 27 points.

Bessemer Academy 46, Kingwood Christian 40

Lauren Rozof led the Lions (10-6, 6-4 in AISA Class 3A, Region 2) with a game-high 21 points.

Evangel Christian 71, East Central Christian 26

Abby Letson led the Lightning (15-1) with 22 points. Mary Kathryn Sawyer added 14 points and 18 rebounds.

Hope Christian 37, Tuscaloosa Home Educators 16

Judi Vignuelle led the Eagles (10-6) with 14 points, five rebounds and five steals.
