Several political action committees and leadership groups throughout the state were the top donors to Cam Ward’s campaign for the Alabama Senate.

Ward, R-Alabaster, submitted his campaign contribution report to the Alabama secretary of state’s office Jan. 28, and reported more than $150,000 in total contributions from more than 350 donors for the June 2010 Republican primary election.

Ward currently represents District 49 on the Alabama House of Representatives, and is a candidate for the District 14 seat on the Alabama Senate. As of Jan. 29, no other candidates had qualified to run against him in the Senate election.

The candidate’s top contribution came from the Montgomery-based Alabama Retail Association Political Action Committee, which donated $10,000.

Athens-based North Alabama Leadership, the Birmingham-based Alabama Power Political Action Committee, the Montgomery-based Farm Political Action Committee, the Montgomery-based Alabama Realtors Political Action Committee and the Montgomery-based Auto Political Action Committee each contributed $5,000.

Of the 354 contributions, 112 were submitted to Ward’s campaign online, which is a record for an Alabama legislative campaign.

“I am so grateful for the broad range of support we’ve received in the Senate campaign from individuals and pro-business groups who want to see the engines of prosperity revved up in Alabama through economic development and job creation,” Ward wrote in a press release.

“The fact that over 350 contributors believed in the message of our campaign is very heartening,” he added.
