Briarwood, Chelsea to meet in area championship game

Briarwood Christian School and Chelsea High School will meet in the championship game of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A, Area 8 girls’ basketball tournament Feb. 6 at Briarwood.

Briarwood Christian 44, John Carroll 37

Briarwood’s Cara Medders scored a 3-pointer to make it 35-32 with five minutes left in the game. Julia Hoke added another three points minutes later to extend Briarwood’s lead to 40-32. With only 30 seconds left in the game, John Carroll cut the lead to 42-37. Medders and Anna Handlin each sank one free throw in the final seconds.

Julia Hoke led the Lions with 12 points. Laura Gilbert added 11 and Cara Medders finished with 10.

Chelsea 45, Shelby County 41

Chelsea started out leading 4-0 but Shelby County quickly tied it up at 6-all in the first quarter. Shelby County led 26-25 at halftime.

Shelby County’s Lady Wildcats pulled ahead in the 3rd quarter with a 3-pointer from Alicia Nunn and points from Ashley Mizzell that extended the Wildcats’ lead to seven points. With less than four minutes in the game, Chelsea fought back to cut the lead to three points at 41-38.

With 31 seconds left, Chelsea cut the lead to 41-40 before the Hornets’ Lauren Swee sank both of her foul shots to give Chelsea a 42-41 lead with only 21 seconds left.

Shelby County had their chance to get ahead with foul shots, but missed both. Shelby County fouled Chelsea again with only 12 seconds left and Amanda Mock sealed Chelsea’s win with two foul shots.

Chelsea’s leading scorers were Perri Lambert with 23 points, Amanda Mock with eight and Lauren Swee with six. Shelby County’s Alicia Nunn led the Wildcats with 12 points, followed closely by Alexis Lewis with 10 and Ashley Mizzell with nine points.
