Buck Creek Park will receive a visual upgrade over the next few weeks after the Alabaster City Council approved a bid for new fencing at the park.

The council approved a $30,468 bid from Capitol Fence to install new fencing around the baseball fields at the park during a brief Feb. 4 meeting.

The new fencing will replace the park’s current worn and rusty fences, said Alabaster Parks and Recreation Department Director Ricky Nance.

“It will take about seven to 10 days to completely get the fences up once we get started on it,” Nance said. “Hopefully, within two weeks from now we will get started on it.”

In other business, the council:

Unanimously passed a resolution opposing a bill currently in the Alabama Legislature regarding taxes on prescription drugs.

If the bill was signed into law, it would exempt pharmacies from paying taxes on profits generated through prescription drug sales, said Ward 4 Councilman Rick Walters.

“There are already no taxes on prescription drugs,” Walters said. “But this bill would exempt pharmacies from paying taxes on profits from prescription drug sales.

“I feel this is not a good bill at all,” Walters added.

Announced the Albert L. Scott Public Library will be kicking off the statewide Big Read program Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the library.

The event will include refreshments, and Alabaster Mayor David Frings will lead those in attendance in reading the first chapter of Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”
