Chelsea, Shelby County wrestlers qualify for state meet

Chelsea High School senior Curtis Crooks won the first sectional title of his wrestling career Feb. 6 at a Class 6A sectional at Tallassee High School.

Crooks, who was one of four Chelsea wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament, recorded two pins before topping Tallassee’s Josh Highland 5-2 in the 135-pound championship match at the Class 5A sectional. Crooks improved his overall record to 15-1 in individual matches this season.

Thomas Blottin, who finished runner-up in the 215-pound division, Justin Medler and D.J. Knight also qualified for the state tournament.

Four Shelby County High School wrestlers qualified for the state tournament. Jeffrey Hughes, Gerald Nichols, Josh Reid and Jacob Oliver each finished fourth in their respective weight divisions at the Class 5A sectional at Tallassee High School.
