The Class 4A, Area 7 tournament championship between Calera High School and visiting Holt came down to a series of runs for each team.

In the end, Holt’s runs were too much to overcome as the Ironmen defeated the Eagles 85-79 Monday night at Calera High School.

Deondre Haynes led the Eagles ( 14-15) with 39 points. Ronnie Clark added 14 points and Jeremy Hyde chipped in 13 points and seven blocked shots.

Holt went on a 13-3 run to end the first quarter and start the second, and added a 14-4 run to end the third quarter and start the fourth quarter.

Calera got off to a quick start on the night, running to an 8-3 lead in the first three and a half minutes of the game. The Eagles got four points from Deondre Haynes and two points and four blocked shots from Jeremy Hyde during the run.

Holt would answer back quickly, running off eight-straight points over the next two minutes. The scoring would be back and forth the rest of the quarter and Calera found itself down 21-17.

Calera used a 12-2 run midway through the second quarter to take a 29-28 lead with 4:26 remaining in the first half. Haynes scored six points during the run and Ronnie Clark chipped in four as Calera took a 40-39 lead at the half.

The third quarter would see a back-and-forth effort, as the teams exchanged baskets for the first five minutes. Each team lead by no more than three points and there would be nine lead changes in the quarter. Holt used a 7-2 run over the last three minutes to take a 58-53 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Holt would expand their lead to 64-55 over the first two minutes in the fourth quarter before Calera would score two straight baskets on lay-ups by Blayne Sumrall and Haynes to cut the lead to 64-59. The teams traded baskets the rest of the game as the Ironmen held on to win the area championship.

Calera will travel to Midfield for a Class 4A sub-regional contest in the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs Feb. 12. Tip-off time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
