Oak Mountain leads after day one at state wrestling tournament

Oak Mountain High School leads the Class 6A team standings after the preliminary rounds of the Alabama High School Athletic Association state wrestling tournament Feb. 11 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Seven Oak Mountain wrestlers who qualified for the state tournament picked up two wins and advanced to the Class 6A championship quarterfinals, which will take place Feb. 12. The Eagles are currently in the lead with 83.5 points after the Class 6A preliminary championship and consolation rounds.

Jesse Smith won by pin and earned a major decision in 103-pound action. Tanner Moon, a University of Virginia wrestling signee, won by a pin and a technical fall in his two 119-pound matches. Reid Bishop picked up two pins against his 130-pound foes.

Jared Woodall picked up two wins, one by forfeit and one by decision, in his two 152-pound matches. Justin Woodall won by a pin and earned a major decision in 160-pound action. Bradley Kirkpatrick picked up two pins in his 171-pound matches.

Whit Whitfield finished with two pins in heavyweight action during the first day of the state tournament.

Thompson is in fifth place after the first day with 52 points. Three Warriors advanvced to the Class 6A championship quarterfinals.

Nick Hall picked up a pin and a victory by decision in his first two 140-pound matches. Josh Gillaspie won one match by pin and another match by decision in 152-pound action. Jimmy Miller picked up two wins, one by pin and one by major decision, in his two 215-pound matches.

Pelham, which had eight wrestlers qualify for the state tournament, will send two wrestlers into the Class 6A championship quarterfinals.

Logan Huey won two matches by decision, including one in overtime, in 125-pound action. Taylor Anchors won a match by decision and a match by major decision in the 145-pound bracket.

Brothers Geoffrey and Tommy Bostany of Spain Park are both headed to the Class 6A championship quarterfinals. Geoffrey won both of his 135-pound matches by pin. Tommy won one match by pin and one match by decision in 112-pound action.
